Photos from the saddle

You know there must be a big race coming up if you get to the gate before opening time at 6am in the dark, thinking your the first and only one there and look up the mountain and see a row of familiar twinkling lights snaking up the trail. Scott training has officially commenced.

Its beginning to look a lot like Spring time!

5 acre picnic

We had a nice dinner picnic on a lovely 5 acres in Murrumbateman last night. It would be great to own a block like this one........heeheehee!.

Single track is bacon

SINGLE TRACK IS BACON

I like bacon. When I see it or smell it, I salivate and I know right away that I want some. And from the first bite, I enter a state of bliss and I know I want more. For me, single track works in exactly the same way, in fact I could be convinced that single track is actually bacon. When I see it or 'smell' that it is nearby, I salivate and I know right away that I want some. And from the first taste, I enter that happy place and yes, I know I want more. I have always known I could eat more bacon than was ever served on my plate at breakfast and on occasion I have gone back for a more, but I have never tested how much I could consume. I have never gone back and piled on every strip in the bain marie and sat down to explore just how much bacon is enough. I do not know my bacon limit. I'm no Ron Swanson, but I have thought about it a lot. I don't know my single track limit either. I mean, is there even such a thing as too much single track? Did you ever want to find out? If you had a huge pile of bacon (or single track) in front of you, how would you approach its consumption? Would you eat ravenously or take your time and savour each bite? Would you do both? Maybe you can eat ravenously and savour each bite simultaneously.

Sunday morning Stromlo Red and Blue lap in training for the Scott 25 hour this year. It took Sime, Joe and myself just over 1 hour to complete the 2 laps totalling about 20kms with approx 500 vertical metres climbed.

Scott 25 with Blackett Homes

Its almost been a year since Em, Jem, Rich and I were racing around Stromlo in the cold, boggy, wet and windy conditions of the Scott 24 hour mountain bike race 2012.

We were camped up on a hill, a fair distance from transition with a smallish tent, little weather cover, no heat, no light, no power and 6 kids to look after in between laps. The girls did a couple of early laps each and then took the kids home for the night, with Rich and I nominating to do the gruelling night shift. It was tough going being constantly filthy, cold and wet not to mention tired, with little light and alone in between laps. I vividly remember wanting to throw the Camber off the mountain at one point early Sunday morning as I was in a world of hurt and wondering why I chose to ride my bike in the rain and mud up a hill at 2am!

We completed 18 laps as a team, which was a fair effort considering we were down to 2 riders through the night and the track resembled that of a quagmire in many sections with the miserable conditions. Overall an awesome endurance riding experience of which I will always remember, but probably more so for how hard it became at times and how tricky the trails became to ride. I can still hear the horrible grinding sound our bikes made riding through the swampy areas, where your thoughts were consumed with how much money would it would cost at the end of the race to try and fix your poor battered machine.

This year however might be a completely different race all together. Not only do we get an extra hour of racing now being a 25 hour race, but I have also been asked to join the Blackett Homes sponsored team of 6 along with Rich and Joe (Mad Kow racing stars). We will be racing from an official team marquee right on pit lane amongst all the action. Riding kit, heat, light, food, power and all the comforts of home are a given. All we will have to think about is pedalling, climbing and enjoying the high banking flowy berms of  the single track wonderland that is Mt Stromlo. Reduced lap distances, limited horrid up hill rock gardens, upgraded trails, riding in relative comfort and most importantly the exciting prospect of a team of 6 for the race could produce some swift transitions!! Sounds good to me!

Another race, another excuse to 'train' more. Bring on early October! and Go team Blackett Homes!

Grandad in town

Grandad/Dad had his first 'non homeless' visit to Canberra after recently moving into his new house in Tura Beach. Lovely to see him again, although I did have to compete for his attention with his new friend out the back, the Chimeny fire!

Looking forward to seeing you again, maybe next time down in your new visitors quarters!

Patrick

How rude! He didnt even wake up for his uncle!

Movin dirt

Ben, Kate, James and Patricks new house needed some soil moved out the back ready for turf to go down. So with the help of Sam, Lucas and James, Ben and I got to work moving the huge piles of dirt from the front of the house to the back. Although the kids helping soon turned into them just playing on the dirt pile and getting filthy! Good dirty fun for all!

Lucas talk

Me - Before your shower I'm going to take you for a poo on the toilet, ok?

Lucas - If you take me to the toilet I'll kick you!

Jem - Lucas, thats rude, if you kick daddy I'll have to take your spotty leopard away.

Lucas (without emotion) - Then Ill kick you too!
